The Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University (ASU) included Partner Mel Soliz in a recent article about the relationship between the law school and the Arizona Society of Healthcare Attorneys (AzSHA). As President of AzSHA and an ASU Law alumna, Mel shared insights into how the organization supports the next generation of health care attorneys.

In the article, Mel detailed AzSHA’s efforts to bridge the gap between legal education and practice. Through initiatives like free memberships for ASU Law students and the Scholars Program, students can gain valuable access to educational programming, mentorship, and networking opportunities to ensure they are well-equipped to navigate the complexities of health care law.

“The future of health law depends on well-trained, passionate legal professionals and it’s our responsibility as an organization to help cultivate that talent,” Mel said. “By supporting students, AzSHA ensures that the next generation of health care attorneys is prepared to tackle the evolving legal and regulatory challenges in the industry. Investing in students also strengthens the profession as a whole — helping to create a robust, knowledgeable and ethical legal community.”

A dedicated member of AzSHA for more than a decade and President since 2021, Mel has been influential in fulfilling the organization’s mission to help lawyers and regulatory compliance professionals stay informed and connected as the industry evolves.

Mel’s regulatory practice focuses on compliance with data privacy, access, and interoperability laws (such as the Information Blocking Rule and CMS interoperability mandates as well as state mini-interoperability laws), health IT/technology service contracting, and HIN/HIEs (including national and state interoperability frameworks such as TEFCA, Carequality, CommonWell, DURSA, DxF, and SCPA).

She regularly speaks in local and national forums on these topics and has been active in state and federal policymaking on data privacy and HIE issues. She is the President of the Arizona Society of Healthcare Attorneys and is regularly lauded by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers, BTI Client Service All Stars, and Southwest Super Lawyers.
